Equine Wellness and Preventive Care

Veterinarian examining horse leg tendons

We recommend annual wellness exams for all horses to help keep them healthy, active, and free of parasites. Occasionally, we'll suggest more frequent checkups for geriatric horses or those with persistent health conditions. Wellness visits give us an opportunity to become acquainted with you and your horse. During this visit, we will establish your horse as a patient so that you can take advantage of our emergency services if needed.

If you’re currently interested in buying a horse, we can perform a pre-purchase examination to help you make an informed decision.

Our Exams

At every wellness visit, we’ll conduct a general physical to check for any obvious signs that an illness or other condition could be affecting your horse.

Your horse’s checkup will also include the following:

  • Parasite prevention/control
  • Vaccinations
  • Deworming
  • Coggins testing

Customized Health Care Plans

Like people, each horse is an individual and requires tailored care to ensure optimal health. Your horse’s Equine Sports Medicine veterinarian will design a preventive care plan designed to meet your horse’s specific needs, whether you’ve got an elite equine athlete or a family-friendly horse that loves long walks.

Health Certificates

If you’re moving a horse into California, the state requires that you file a valid Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, which is commonly referred to as a health certificate. Additionally, horses being moved in or out of the country must be accompanied by International Health Certificates. These certificates verify that your horse has been examined and tested by an accredited veterinarian. We can help you complete and file the appropriate documentation.

Please give us a call to schedule your horse’s annual wellness exam.
