Minor Field Surgeries
We are dedicated to providing your horses with fully ambulatory care that is both comprehensive and safe. We can perform certain minor, routine surgeries safely in the field. If your horse requires more complex surgery, we will refer you to an area specialty hospital.
Our Procedures
Our trucks contain everything we need to sedate or anesthetize your horse and perform minor surgical care in the field. The procedures we can perform include, but are not limited to:
- Castration
- Endoscopy for the diagnosis of certain conditions and abnormalities
- Mass removals/dermatological procedures
- Enucleation (removal of the eye)
- Laceration repair
- Cryptorchid testicle removal
Pre-Surgery Evaluations
Before any procedure requiring sedation, your Equine Sports Medicine veterinarian will evaluate your horse’s overall health and consider any underlying conditions that may be present. And we’ll take a good listen to your horse’s heart. It’s important that we understand your horse’s complete medical history and know if the horse is currently taking any prescription medications.
Safe Sedation and Anesthesia
We may use a combination of sedatives, pain killers, and local anesthesia to make sure your horse is comfortable and immobilized prior to performing surgery. We want to make any procedure the least traumatic as possible for your horse. We will use the appropriate amount of sedation to keep your horse calm and provide a painless transition to recovery.
Please call us if you have any questions about our surgical capabilities or to discuss your horse’s condition.
